PNG and Australia Enter Historic Pukpuk Alliance Treaty

Papua New Guinea and Australia have officially become formal treaty allies after the Pukpuk Treaty came into legal effect today, marking a new chapter in relations between the two neighbouring countries. The agreement became legally binding following the exchange of instruments of ratification, completing the final step after the PNG Parliament endorsed the treaty in March.

The milestone was jointly announced in Brisbane by Prime Minister James Marape and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The alliance is the first treaty of its kind for Papua New Guinea with any nation and represents Australia's first formal alliance agreement in more than seven decades.

The treaty is built around two key principles. The first recognises the sovereignty and independence of both nations, while the second commits Papua New Guinea and Australia to working together as allies, including providing mutual support in defence and security matters.

It also sets the foundation for expanding defence cooperation, including closer military engagement, modernisation initiatives and opportunities for citizens of both countries to serve in each other's defence forces.

Papua New Guinea becomes the first Pacific Island nation to formalise such an alliance with Australia. Fiji has also strengthened defence cooperation with Canberra through the separate Ocean of Peace Alliance.

Following the announcement, Prime Minister Marape was expected to join Mr Albanese along with the leaders of Samoa and Tonga at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium to watch State of Origin Game III.

"The entry into force of the Pukpuk Treaty is a momentous step in the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea," Mr Albanese said.

"Our alliance reflects the deep trust we share as the closest of neighbours, partners and friends.

"In an uncertain world, this treaty demonstrates our shared commitment to a region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous."
