PNG Chiefs officials have welcomed a major rugby league name to Port Moresby as former New Zealand Kiwis representative Joseph Manu arrived in the capital to explore the franchise’s plans ahead of its 2028 NRL entry.

The ex-Sydney Roosters star landed at Jacksons International Airport alongside his family and senior Chiefs representatives, including football boss Michael Chammas and CEO Lorna McPherson, as speculation continues over a possible deal that could bring him back to the 13-man code.

The visit follows earlier reports in April that the PNG Chiefs had expressed interest in securing Manu’s services as they continue shaping a roster capable of competing in their first NRL season.

Chammas told reporters that Manu’s visit was an opportunity for the player and his family to understand what the club is creating in Papua New Guinea.

He said the Chiefs were looking beyond individual signings and were focused on establishing a strong foundation before joining the national competition.

Manu’s possible arrival would add further experience to a squad already featuring confirmed recruits such as five-eighth Jerome Luai, winger Alex Johnston, Connor Watson and Matty Lees.

The Chiefs have made it clear they want a mixture of international experience and emerging PNG talent as they prepare for their first NRL campaign.

The franchise has also invested in young PNG prospects, with Gairo Voro, Morea Morea and Finley Glare recently securing development opportunities through the London Broncos.

Chammas said the club’s recruitment strategy was designed to ensure the Chiefs are ready to challenge established NRL teams when they enter the competition.

“The Chiefs mean business. We are working hard to put together a roster that can represent PNG proudly and compete at the highest level,” Chammas said.
