PNG U-16 Side Makes Dream Start with 4-0 Win Over Samoa

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has opened its OFC Under-16 Men's Championship 2026 campaign in the best possible fashion, defeating Samoa 4-0 in front of home supporters during the opening evening match in Port Moresby.

The home side looked composed from the opening whistle and quickly took charge of the contest with attacking football that kept Samoa under pressure throughout the first half. Two early goals gave PNG a firm grip on the match before Samoa's challenge became even harder after being reduced to 10 players before the break.

PNG wasted little time making their intentions known, with Jaru Eron breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. The defender produced an impressive run down the left side, beating two opponents before rounding goalkeeper Moemanatu Lesatele and calmly placing the ball into an empty net.

Only two minutes later, PNG doubled its advantage. Iga Steven drove down the left flank and whipped in a dangerous cross that Samoa failed to clear. Toka Goro reacted quickest inside the penalty area to force the loose ball over the line from close range.

Captain Matthew Sopo nearly added another goal before halftime when his powerful effort struck the crossbar.

Samoa's hopes of fighting back suffered another setback deep into first-half stoppage time. Defender Bevan Jr Kapisi received a straight red card after bringing down Boas Tommy, who had broken clear on goal just outside the penalty area.

Playing with an extra man, PNG continued to control possession and create chances after the interval while Samoa worked hard to stay organised in defence.

The hosts extended their lead in the 61st minute when Nigel Gunemba played an excellent through ball into the path of Tommy. The forward cut inside onto his right foot before driving his shot beyond Lesatele.

Despite the scoreline, Samoa's goalkeeper worked tirelessly to keep the margin from growing. Lesatele pulled off several fine saves to frustrate the PNG attackers during the second half.

However, the home side eventually found a fourth goal with 10 minutes remaining. John Millis delivered a cross into the area where Klivet Ronald's attempt failed to connect cleanly. Steven was quickest to react, poking the loose ball into the net from close range.

The convincing victory gives PNG maximum points to begin the tournament and provides plenty of confidence ahead of Wednesday's meeting with New Caledonia.
