Enga Police Chief Escapes Ambush, PNG PM Marape Vows Justice

An ambush on a senior PNG police officer in the Enga highlands has drawn a sharp response from Prime Minister James Marape, who says those responsible for the attack will be tracked down.

Chief Superintendent Steven Harris, the Provincial Police Commander for Enga, was leading a convoy near Yaltep, not far from the Sirunki Strawberry Farm, when armed attackers opened fire on his team. The officers were en route to arrest suspects wanted in connection with a murder case at the time of the shooting.

Quick action from three police reservists is being credited with preventing serious injury or worse. The reservists positioned themselves around Harris and returned fire while working to secure the scene, and nearby PNG Defence Force soldiers who heard the exchange of gunfire moved in to help, clearing the way for the convoy to press on safely.

Marape described the shooting as a calculated bid to undermine State authority and vowed that the criminals behind it, along with anyone who armed or sheltered them, would face the full weight of the law. He called on churches, councillors and residents in the affected area to come forward with information, warning that shielding the gunmen would only prolong the violence in Enga.

The Prime Minister also renewed his call for disputes to be settled through legitimate means, telling people in Maramuni and beyond that petitions to the provincial and national governments remain open, and that lawlessness is never the answer to unresolved grievances.

He closed his statement with a message of support for the officers involved and a broader appeal for peace across the province.

"I strongly condemn this ambush. An attack on our police personnel is an attack on the State, the rule of law and every law-abiding citizen who wants to live in peace," Marape said.

"The criminals responsible must understand that they cannot hide forever. The full force of the law will be brought against those who planned and carried out this attack, as well as anyone who provided them with weapons, shelter or other assistance.

"Two wrongs do not make a right. Breaking the law is never the answer to resolving legitimate issues. Our democracy provides lawful avenues for citizens to seek justice and accountability, including peaceful petitions and, where necessary, the courts.

"Let us all work together to restore lasting peace, uphold the rule of law and build a stronger and more united Papua New Guinea."
