PNG launches national ICT policy and AI-powered EduNex platform for schools

PAPUA New Guinea has taken a major step towards modernising its education system with the launch of the country's first Integrated ICT Policy and EduNex, an artificial intelligence-powered Learning Management System designed to transform teaching and learning in classrooms across the nation.

The initiative, unveiled by Education Minister Francis Kikin Siune at the Port Moresby National School of Excellence, forms part of the Government's wider plan to digitise education, improve access to quality learning resources and ensure students, teachers and schools are connected through technology.

Speaking during the launch, Mr Siune said the new policy provides a national framework for the use of information and communication technology across the education sector while bringing together digital initiatives that have previously operated independently.

He said Papua New Guinea's education system has long faced challenges due to its rugged geography, scattered population and dependence on paper-based administration, making the delivery of teaching materials, student assessments and educational services difficult for many schools.

The Minister said advances in digital technology and artificial intelligence are changing education worldwide, making it necessary for PNG to adapt and prepare students for future learning environments.

Mr Siune said the Government's vision is to ensure technology is available to every student and teacher rather than remaining a privilege enjoyed by only a few schools.

He also acknowledged Prime Minister James Marape's commitment to making digital technology and artificial intelligence central to the country's long-term development agenda, saying the education sector would play an important role in achieving that vision.

A key feature of the reform is EduNex, which has been developed as an AI-powered platform providing teachers with curriculum-aligned teaching resources, assessment tools and digital classrooms while giving students broader access to learning materials.

The Minister announced that EduNex will also include Nexa AI, a locally developed artificial intelligence assistant intended to support lesson preparation, provide guided learning for students and reduce routine administrative work for teachers.

He stressed that artificial intelligence would support teachers rather than replace them.

The Government also plans to introduce internet connectivity to schools through Starlink and DataCo, beginning with national schools of excellence before expanding to secondary, primary and rural schools.

To improve online safety, Mr Siune said every school using EduNex will be equipped with an advanced cloud firewall to block illegal and harmful online content.

He called on provincial governments, districts, development partners, churches, communities and educators to work together to implement the reforms.
