PNG Expands European Diplomatic Ties With Montenegro

Papua New Guinea has strengthened its diplomatic engagement in Europe after formally establishing relations with Montenegro through an agreement signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko and Montenegrin counterpart Ranko Krivokapic.

The new diplomatic partnership is expected to create opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, renewable energy and technology, while building on the two countries' existing engagement at international forums.

Tkatchenko said the formal agreement represented an important development in PNG's foreign relations, allowing both countries to pursue direct bilateral engagement and explore areas of shared economic interest.

“Papua New Guinea welcomes the opportunity to establish diplomatic relations with Montenegro,” he said.

The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that the two nations had maintained constructive engagement through the United Nations and other multilateral institutions, but formal diplomatic ties would provide a stronger platform for expanding their relationship.

Although trade and commercial activities between PNG and Montenegro remain modest, Tkatchenko outlined several sectors with potential for future investment and business partnerships.

These include tourism, clean and renewable energy, agricultural production, food processing, SME development, digital innovation and investment promotion.

He said both governments should take a practical approach to economic cooperation by identifying commercially viable opportunities rather than establishing targets without sufficient business foundations.

Tkatchenko highlighted the importance of technical cooperation and private sector involvement in identifying suitable projects that could deliver mutual economic benefits.

The two foreign ministers also discussed strengthening diplomatic representation through the possible appointment of Honorary Consuls in both countries.

Despite the considerable distance separating the two nations, Tkatchenko expressed optimism that the newly formalised relationship would develop into a meaningful partnership through sustained engagement and cooperation.
