PNG's Peace Must Not Be Taken for Granted, Says Marape

Papua New Guinea must value its peaceful environment amid escalating conflicts in other parts of the world, Prime Minister James Marape says, following his return from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Marape described his participation in the international meeting as successful and productive, saying discussions among world leaders highlighted the urgent need for peace, international cooperation and collective action on global challenges.

The Prime Minister said the assembly attracted leaders and government representatives from numerous countries, with climate change and international conflicts dominating much of the discussions.

He pointed out that more than 60 conflicts were currently taking place worldwide, placing into perspective the relative stability enjoyed by Papua New Guinea and its neighbouring countries.

Marape said PNG was fortunate to be spared from many of the major conflicts affecting other nations and encouraged citizens to recognise the value of living in a peaceful society.

He also expressed appreciation for the broader Asia-Pacific region, which continues to enjoy relative peace despite facing various localised issues and security concerns.

The discussions at the United Nations, he said, underscored the responsibility of governments to work together in preventing conflict, strengthening international relationships and addressing issues that threaten the wellbeing of people globally.
