PNG Police Tighten Security For Sold-Out Digicel Cup Grand Final

Papua New Guinea police are preparing for a major security operation in Port Moresby ahead of Sunday’s Digicel Cup Grand Final, with the match between PRK Mendi Muruks and ENB Agmark Gurias already sold out.

NCD/Central Commander Benjamin Turi has appealed to travelling fans to stay away from the capital if they do not have tickets, saying police will closely watch areas around the National Football Stadium and Boroko to prevent disorder.

The warning follows social media activity suggesting some Southern Highlands supporters may travel to Port Moresby regardless of whether they have secured entry to the game.

Commander Turi said there was no reason for large groups of people without tickets to congregate around the match venue or nearby areas.

He said checkpoints would be established to monitor movement around the stadium precinct and Boroko.

“We made mass arrests of more than 50 people last week, and we will not hesitate to do the same this Sunday if individuals travel around in groups to harass the public,” Commander Turi said.

The security operation will involve NCD Metropolitan police, Central Provincial Police, Mobile Squad personnel, the Dog Unit and reservists.

Commander Turi said police would also be watching social media threats and would take action against people who attempted to cause trouble.

“Those posting threats on social media have no place in this city,” he said.

Fans under the influence of alcohol or behaving badly will not be permitted inside the stadium.

“Those caught intoxicated will be locked in police transport vans, taken straight to cells, and charged accordingly.”

Police will also remove vehicles that are parked unlawfully around Boroko.

Commander Turi urged supporters from both sides to enjoy the occasion peacefully and respect the outcome regardless of which team lifts the trophy.

“Only one team can win, and everyone must accept the final result when the whistle blows.”
