Murder Suspect Surrender to Port Moresby Police over Eight Mile Killing

A man suspected of murdering a fellow Hela Province resident at Eight Mile's Last Block in Port Moresby has surrendered to police and is now in custody, allowing investigators to proceed with the case.

NCD and Central Province Police Commander Benjamin Turi received the suspect and commended his relatives and police officers for working together to facilitate the voluntary surrender. He said the decision would help prevent possible retaliatory attacks between the families of the deceased and the accused.

Commander Turi said police would now take responsibility for investigating the alleged murder, gathering evidence and preparing the case for court. He also called on the deceased's relatives to cooperate with investigators and provide relevant information to support the prosecution.

He reminded the suspect that taking another person's life was prohibited under the law, adding that the principle was also reflected in the Ten Commandments and the Papua New Guinea Constitution.

Turi further praised police officers for maintaining close ties with the community and responding promptly to serious criminal cases, saying such cooperation helped strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.

Preliminary information indicates that the deceased, who was from Takali in Hela Province, and the suspect knew each other and had been communicating before arranging to meet at Eight Mile, where the alleged killing occurred.
