PNG Environment Authority Chief Rejects Death Allegations, Seeks Police Probe

 PNG CEPA Managing Director Jude Tukuliya has lodged a complaint with the Police Cybercrime Unit following the circulation of social media allegations linking him to the death of a person at his residence in Papua New Guinea.

Tukuliya has strongly denied any involvement in the death, describing the online claims as malicious and unfounded, while calling for authorities to investigate those responsible for producing and distributing the material.

In a statement, he said the individual died at his home after an emergency in which a heart attack was suspected. He stressed that the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, medical personnel and other competent authorities were responsible for determining the actual circumstances surrounding the death.

He warned against treating unverified social media claims as established facts, saying the circulation of such allegations could damage reputations, interfere with investigations and cause further distress to grieving families.

Tukuliya said he had previously experienced similar allegations when he was appointed to head CEPA, which he regarded as an attempt to undermine his character and professional standing.

Despite the controversy, he said his focus remained on implementing institutional reforms, improving accountability and strengthening the authority's role in environmental protection and sustainable national development.

He acknowledged that CEPA's enforcement activities and reforms might affect certain interests but maintained that he would continue fulfilling his statutory responsibilities.

The managing director also appealed to police, NICTA, telecommunications providers and other relevant authorities to address the alleged online defamation and identify those behind the posts.

He said freedom of expression should not be used to justify the fabrication of accusations or the circulation of unverified claims against public officials. He further urged journalists and social media users to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it.

Tukuliya encouraged anyone possessing credible information about the death to approach police directly rather than engaging in online speculation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to his position and the work of the authority, stating: "I reaffirm my commitment to serving CEPA, the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea with integrity, professionalism and dedication."
