Rugby League World Cup : Fiji take commanding 30-4 half-time lead over PNG Orchids

THE Papua New Guinea Orchids find themselves facing a daunting task at the main break, trailing a disciplined Fiji Bulikula side 30–4 in their Round 2 Women's Rugby League World Cup clash at the Santos National Football Stadium this afternoon.

Despite playing in front of a vocal home crowd in ideal conditions, the home side struggled to arrest momentum early as the visitors registered five first-half tries.

Fiji struck first through winger Sienna Laing in the 4th minute. The Orchids gave local supporters hope with an immediate response when center Ua Ravu barged over in the 8th minute to narrow the gap to two points.

However, missed conversions and crucial defensive lapses cost the hosts as Fiji took firm control of the contest.

Bulikula running back Luisa Yaranamua crossed in the 19th minute, before Taina Naividi added Fiji’s third try in the 24th minute to extend the lead. Late first-half five-pointers from Losana Lutu (30th minute) and Tahlia Marshall (33rd minute) blew the scoreline open before half-time.

Fiji was clinical off the tee, converting all five attempts—Sereana Naitokatoka booting two before Yaranamua slotted the remaining three. PNG failed to add the extra points on their sole try.

Head coach Tahnee Norris will have a major task on her hands during the break to rally the Orchids for a stern second-half response on home turf.
