Fiji President thanks government, CSOs, media, public and international community

Fiji's President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, has expressed his sincere appreciation firstly to Government, civil society organisations and members of the public for all the preparations prior to Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston striking Fiji.

The President thanked the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in particular for leading by example in personally seeing to the nation’s state of readiness prior to the cyclone.

The Prime Minister oversaw a whole-of-Government preparation-coordinated through the National Disaster Management Office and the Divisional Commissioners.

He issued messages encouraging all members of the public to prepare for the cyclone and after the cyclone, he issued messages of assurances that Government will assist wherever possible to return life to normalcy.

“The exemplary leadership demonstrated by the Hon. Prime Minister helped ensure that more lives were saved. His messages of assurances are hugely encouraging especially to those who were affected by the cyclone. It is a reflection of genuine care for the lives and the welfare of all the people of Fiji,” the President said.

“And for that, I wish to thank him in my capacity as Fiji’s President and Head of State.”

The President also thanked all those that worked during the peak and the aftermath of the cyclone including the national and divisional disaster management officers, the Police, Military, medical personnel, volunteers, and among many others, the utility companies including the Fiji Electricity Authority, Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Water Authority, Telecom Fiji and the mobile phone service providers.

He also acknowledged the Fiji Red Cross Society and civil society organisations that have started to mobilise their respective teams to assist those who were affected by the cyclone.

“I thank the media for its role in disseminating news and information about the cyclone. This certainly helped the public to prepare for the worst cyclone to hit Fiji.”

“I also acknowledged the members of the public for heeding the advice to prepare for the cyclone. This has gone a long way in minimising the loss of lives,” the President said.

The President this morning also shared his condolences for the families of those who died because of the cyclone.

“To all the families who lost loved ones, please know that the Nation is praying for you,” the President said.

The President also thanked the international community for its assistance.

“News that the international community has started to assist Fiji from one of its most powerful and destructive cyclones is most welcome and I thank them for their support,” the President said.

“I also call on the Nation to pray that we do not encounter another cyclone as we recover from Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston,” he said.
