The country's Prime Minister, James Marape has released the following statement on the 44th Independence Day.

"The vision to Make PNG A Richest Black Christian Nation may only a dream; We can have all the money in the world but if we are not a moral and ethical nation, we really have nothing. Why not consider Making PNG a Ethical Black Christian State?

How can Papua New Guinea become socio-economically rich among developed group of nations?

1. The difference between a poor and rich nation does not depend upon the age of the Nation.

Example;
Countries like India, Egypt, Peru, Cambodia, which are civilization more than 2000 years old but are nevertheless developing and poor countries. On the other hand, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which 150 years back were insignificant, today are developed and rich countries.

2. The difference between a poor and rich nation is also not also dependent upon the available natural resources.

Example;
Japan has limited territory, 80% mountainous, unsuitable for residence, agriculture or farming, but is the third largest worlds economy. Korea doesn't have oil but has the world's largest refinery it exports refined petroleum. And also another example, Germany is not the best in robotics, yet produces the world's best cars.

3. The difference between a poor and rich nation does not depend up on the number of educationist and intellectuals.

Example;
Cuba has one the best proffessors and academics in the world, yet it is considered as a third world nation.

4. The diffence between rich and poor ethnicity or nationality also do not evince importance.

Example;
Many Africans are heavy in laziness in their countries of origin, however are forcefully productive in other countries.

What then is the difference?

The difference is the attitude of the people, moulded for many years by education, moral responsibility and culture.

If you analyse the conduct of the people from the rich and developed countries, it is observed that a majority abide by the following principles of life:

1. Ethical behavior as a basic principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. The respect for Laws and Regulations.
5. Respect by the majority of citizens towards others/Democracy.
6. The love of work.
7. The effort to save and invest.
8. The will to be productive.
9. Punctuality.
10. Self (and not enforced) discipline.

In Papua New Guinea we are not poor because we lack natural resources or because nature was cruel towards us. We are poor because we lack attitude. We lack the will to follow and teach these principles of morality and ethics.

It is not so wise to pursue materialistic richest for a morally poor generation. We must first and foremost consider Making Papua New Guinea an Ethical Black Christian State. Because moral and ethics are important values that must be possessed by everyone. Without morality and ethics, someone's wealth becomes meaningless and maybe that wealth is just a moment.

When we say Take Back PNG, from whom are we referring to?? foreigners, corporations, debtors, politicians, bureaucrats, colonizers??

The answer to "Take Back PNG" remain in ourselves. If we are emotionally attached to our tribe, religion or political leaning to the point that truth and justice become secondary considerations, our education is useless and senseless, our exposure is otiose. if we can't reason beyond Petty sentiment, we are a liability to humanity.

Papua New Guinea is as what it is, only because of one factor; all of us want to take some advantages over everything and over everyone. I shall prosper and have a good life and time, at the cost of others. When we see something wrong, we allow that in our mind to "let it be". We think that to change a country and society is not my job, it's the job of some stupid politican or a saint government, and we are stuck with no choices. We can steal, cheat, take a short cut if nobody is watching, nobody is there to punish us. Lust, greed, corruption rules our own mind, so but naturally those virtues rule our lives and our nation has reached its climax today, and one wonders how and what the next generation will be like in the next 5 years!

Sanctity of the moral fiber of our society has declined so rapidly that it's hard to keep track of it. It's fair to say we are almost a lost generation. A generation that has squandered the opportunity to prosper. We have squandered the opportunity to become the paragon of prosperity and nation-building. We for almost 44 years have lost the opportunity to bring the best out of our young - precisely because of unethical leadership.

Summary
Our future, the one many a citizens dream of, is one where constitutionalism rules, basic rights remain sacred, equality before the Law is observed, freedoms reign, social justice is alive, right to life is assured, corruption and impunity are historical artefacts, labour laws are favourable, mineral wealth is fairly shared, capitalism doesn't override social good, public service is civil and has integrity.

Nothing will change if we depend upon something external to happen. Change will happen only for the good, if and only if we can change ourselves, our thoughts, actions, spirit, attitude ... Internally. Take Back PNG, is to build an eco system that encourages and nourishes clean governance and human value system of integrity.

History is replete with evidence on how men and women of integrity are able to lift entire nations from a place of hopeless to great fortune. Imagine a generation with moral standards, who hold jealously to a value system of integrity, decency, honesty, transparency, accountability and the respect of the sanctity of human life.

PNG future deserves to be led by a calibre of such generation, with whom it is always possible to bring the best out of a nation. We know that it is not always possible to produce such generation. And this is the reason why we have the obligation to Make PNG An Ethical Black Christian Nation. Our best chance to become a rich nation is when we always ensure that we cultivate men and women of integrity, men and women with a fear of God. Because people with integrity and moral status will build a richest nation.

PNG Happy 44 Independence!
