Defense Key for PNG Kumuls

Defense will be the main area for the current PNG Resident XIII head coach Adrian Lam to look into when the team goes into camp in Port Moresby in a fortnight. 

Lam who also had the chance of watching some of the PNGNRL run Digicel Cup at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby last year said defense was something they need to train a lot more on and master. “I feel this is an area where we as a rugby league playing country are a long way behind and we need to do a lot of work to get back up to the international level,” Lam said.Lam said his ultimate goal for the Resident XIII team in their match against South Sydney will be made after he sits down with his full team including management, coaching staffs and the players to set a goal collectively.“I do not want to set a goal myself but the team will collectively set it when we sit down together in camp in few weeks time. I would like the team to be part of this goal and give them some ownership,” Lam said.Lam revealed to the Post-Courier yesterday that the local players will also be in the spotlight as scouts from the Australian National Rugby League clubs will be there. When asked about the opportunity or possibility of our players being picked up by the NRL clubs Lam said, “I think a lot of the NRL scouts will be there watching our boys play. All eyes in Australia will be watching this game and it is a great opportunity for each individual to perform and promote themselves.” In saying this, Lam is assuring the many young talents that they have a chance of making it in the Australian NRL scene.Lam will put the boys through a very strict training sessions.Their main focus is on defense and will be expecting the PNG local boys to do their job diligently. “I expect our local players to do a job that represents who they are as individuals and us as a team and a rugby league playing country,” the former Queensland and Sydney Roosters star said.
