Port Moresby hosts female prison officers’ conference
FEMALE prison officers from 12 countries in the region are in Port Moresby to discuss issues they face and their treatment of children and women detainees.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill opened the conference and welcomed the delegates to the country.
Acting Correctional Services Commissioner Michael Waipo thanked the Government for funding the conference on top of a K300,000 sponsorship from the National Gaming Board.
Waipo told the participants to enjoy their stay in PNG “because we have got some much to offer to visitors”.
It was a significant moment for participants as it showed the strength of prison female officers.
Correctional Services Minister Jim Simatab thanked the National Executive Council for financially supporting the conference.
He urged the 12 Pacific islands participants to share their experiences and exchange ideas on issues relating to detainee containment and rehabilitation.
PNG will be represented by its senior women executives and the top hierarchy of the correctional service.
O’Neill said such an occasion “reminds us of the vital role CS women play in the law and justice sector”.
