PNG still champions in rugby league in the Pacific
PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka made this call after the Agmark Rabaul Gurias smashed the visiting Fiji’s premier rugby league team, Sabeto Roosters 42-2 in a one sided affair in the inaugural Melanesia Premier Club championship clash at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Tsaka said he is still not convinced that Fiji ranked 4th in the world was better compared to PNG currently on 11th position in the world ranking.
Tsaka said Fiji is still not better than PNG when seeing the level of the domestic competition they have compared that of PNG.
“I still am not convinced by the world ranking where you just play one test match and then you are ranked of what positions given,” Tsaka said.
Tsaka said the performance by the Gurias proved that PNG was still the big brother in rugby league in the Pacific.
“The victory by the Gurias proved a point that PNG is still the best in rugby league compared to any Pacific Island countries. Our local competition is by far stronger in saying that,” Tsaka said.
However the amazing facts are that the number of Fijian players plucked into the Australian National rugby league competition is by far more than that of PNG.
International Rugby league federation’s development officer Tas Baiteri when asked about this said Fijians are far better athletes compared to PNG.
“Fijians are big, huge and have speed however most are plucked into NRL not in any other positions but only use them on the wing,” Baiteri said.
Newly appointed Chief Executive officer of the PNGRFL Bob Cuttmore confirmed Baiteri’s comments saying there is a huge gap in player selection between Fiji and PNG.
“NRL take Fijians and only use them on the wing than any other positions,” Cuttmore said.
