Polye calls on O'Neill government to address Police brutality
The Opposition has urged the Government to seriously address the issue of police brutality in the country.
Leader Don Polye says cases of police brutality against ordinary citizens is increasing, with the public losing confidence in the police force, as a law enforcement body that is there to protect them.
Many have also also taken to social media, Facebook, expressing their concerns.
Mr Polye says the media has also been reporting stories of police beating and killing civilians, both suspects and innocent, burning and destroying properties.
He says there have been little report made public by the police on actions taken against these rogue personnel.
Mr Polye says the Government must intervene and change this culture, and restore peoples confidence in the force.
He's also appealed to the Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, to review the training at the Bomana Police College, outside Port Moresby, to include more public relations skills in the trainees before they pass out.
The Police Commissioner is understood to have already met with heads of the police college to discuss the training that recruits undergo.
