Minister Tkatchenko Seeks Further Information on Alleged Attack at Tourism Site
Minister for Sports and Tourism, Justin Tkatchenko is seeking further information on an alleged assault that is reported to have taken place near Sogeri last week.
Minster Tkatchenko said the claims are very serious and are being properly investigated by law enforcement authorities, but he questioned the way in which the matter has been sensationalized by misleading and racist claims through the British media.
“It does not help the situation when the issue at hand is falsely dramatised,” the Minister said.
“Let’s get one thing straight, this nonsense talk of cannibalism is only intended to get cheap media attention.
“The same with the invented claims of so-called war paint or masks made from feathers and vines.
“These sorts of claims only trivialise what was surely a terrifying ordeal for the young lady involved.
“The claims appear to come from stereotypical perceptions or historical films and pictures from other parts of the country. Remember that Papua New Guinea is a land of 800 languages and cultures so enough talk of war paint to sell newspapers.
“I hope the people involved in peddling these claims will be honest and stop trying this nonsense for the sake of creating a headline."
The minister said he has made his views very clear in relation to properly investigating and dealing with persons who are alleged to have committed rape.
“Allegations of rape, be they in this country or in England or any country, are deeply disturbing and need to be given appropriate attention and perpetrators brought to justice.”
Minister Tkatchenko said the alleged incident is also a reminder that careful planning and preparation is needed before setting out on a challenge such as Kokoda.
“The couple was warned before they set out that they should only attempt the track if they are properly equipped with supplies and support.
“Kokoda is grueling and must not be taken lightly.
“Security has not been an issue in the past and this matter is being dealt with.
“But people who set out on the Kokoda track must also take with them adequate food and equipment, and they must hire experienced porters to assist them.
“It is also advisable that people avoid alcohol and be aware of their surroundings
when undertaking such a trek.”
