Falling rocks kill mine worker at OK Tedi Mine
A mine worker at PNG's OK Tedi mine was killed by falling rocks at approximately 5PM (local time) on Thursday 10 March.
The incident occurred when a section of rock and dirt fell from the western wall of the mine into a sump located at the bottom of the pit. Unfortunately the mine worker, who was attending to pit drainage, was unable to get clear of the flowing debris.
After initial efforts, recovery was postponed to ensure the safety of emergency response personnel. These efforts have resumed at daylight this morning.
Ok Tedi has contacted the family of our colleague to advise of the incident and extend our deepest sympathy.
As a mark of respect for a lost workmate, operations across the Company have been suspended until further notice. Authorities have been notified and an investigation into the incident has commenced.
