Soldiers deployed to the Highlands to assist Police on Security in Election
Commander of the PNG Defense Force, Brigadier General, Gilbert Toropo, said soldiers are now being deployed to assist police in election security operations, mostly in volatile areas in the Highlands region.
Commander Toropo said there have been ongoing law and order issues and tribal fights that are not related to the elections and their presence on the ground is to stabilize the situation.
''We are already on call out to assist the police and as the PNG Defense Force one of our core tasks is to assist the police support the conduct of the elections.
We have considered Highlands region one of the hot spot areas.
So we will are respond to areas of concern to make sure we provide an environment conducive for our people to go the elections without being intimidated,” Mr Toropo said.
