PNG Student in China's Wuhan calls for urgent Help
A PNG citizen in Wuhan, China has made an urgent appeal to relevant authorities both in the country and the embassy in Beijing to do something and move PNG citizens out.
Ancila Delai, a 3rd Year Petroleum Engineering Student at the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan told NBC news that Wuhan is a deserted city.
"In normal circumstances, the city of Wuhan around this time is usually full of festivities as they celebrate the Chinese new year, but the coronavirus has ripped through this educational hub of China leaving it like a ghost town," Ancila described it.
NBC News spoke to Ancila Delai and she said it's a frightening situation as the city remains on lockdown.
"I don't know how to describe how frightened I am, we are in fear and we are in panic," said Ancila.
Ancila said the situation is so bad that even going out for a brief moment is a high risk.
"Even if we want to go out we need the respiratory mask recommended by the health professionals to actually wear and go out as this mask lasts for four hours, and after four hours we have to change it," she explains.
Ms Delai told NBC News from Wuhan that they've finally made contact with an officer yesterday from the PNG Embassy in Beijing.
She said the officer did not give any concrete information but only asked about the number of students who are currently at the university campus.
According to Ms. Delai they have a total of 21 PNG students in Wuhan.
Meantime, at this stage, it is unclear whether the PNG Embassy in Beijing has any plans in place to assist the PNG citizens in Wuhan.
NBC News contacted the Minister and Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade to get their comments but, both are not responding.
