Former PNG NAC board Chairman Aila arrested

The former Board Chairman of the National Airport Corporation was arrested by the police fraud squad over the weekend.

Mr Reuben Aila aged 52 of Delena village, Kairuku- Hiri District, Central Province was charged with one count of Conspiracy to defraud under section 407 of the Criminal Code Act.

Director National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate Chief Superintendent Mathew Damaru says it is alleged that on 31 July 2018, Mr Aila signed a fraudulent employment contract with former Chief Executive officer of the National Airport Corporation Mr Richard Yopo in which Mr Aila signed as the Chairman of the NAC Board and Richard Yopo as an employee.

That fraudulent Contract of Employment was not endorsed and approved by the Board of Directors of NAC but the Board Chairman Mr. Reuben Aila used his position as the Board Chairman and conspired with Mr. Richard Yopo and signed the contract secretly.

The board was not aware of that contract until in August 2019 when the Board of Directors held a Special Meeting of Shareholders when it was revealed that the illegal contract was secretly signed by Mr. Yopo and Mr. Aila.

Damaru says Mr Aila had abused his power as the Board Chairman and directed the HR consultant to have his remuneration package restructured to the value of K1, 300,000.00 to current.

On Friday the 06th of March 2020 Mr Aila was interviewed in regards to the allegation.

He was formally arrested and charged with Conspiracy to Defraud under Section 407 (1) (b) under the Criminal Code Act.

He was taken to the Boroko Police Station where he was placed in the cells.

Mr Aila will appear in court this week.
