PNG Govt Committed to UBS Loan Inquiry

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape says his government is committed to helping the Union Bank of Switzerland or UBS loan commission of inquiry reach a conclusive finding and those found to have broken the law will face justice.

He says the K3 billion that belongs to the people of PNG was involved in the entire business transaction.

Mr Marape says his government will ensure the inquiry goes into the length and depth of this transaction to ascertain whether there was any act of impropriety.

He says the Commission Chairman Sir Salamo Injia has ensured the engagement of some of the best commissioners and solicitors who were former high court judges in Australia and who have critical knowledge in forensic accounting and investigation.

He says the government will ensure that full funding is given to the inquiry so they do their job of high standard and integrity.
Mr Marape says though many may question the K27 million cost of the inquiry as too high, no money is too high for justice to be secured if wrong was done.

He gave his commitment to the nation that the final report of the inquiry will be tabled in Parliament and further action take place if need be.

Mr Marape adds, the inquiry does not stop the Ombudsman Commission nor police from doing their own investigations as well.

The Prime Minister was speaking to reporters before appearing before the UBS inquiry on Friday.
