PNG Provinces of Hela, SHP, Enga told to get rid of Pigs as swine Fever spreads
The people from the three highlands provinces of Southern Highlands, Hela and Enga have been urged to start killing all their pigs, to contain the spread of the African Swine Fever.
Agriculture Minister John Simon, said this when announcing the discovery of the disease in the Southern Highlands Province recently.
Minister Simon said that they will be dispatching a team from the National Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA) to Mount Hagen shortly, in a bid to try and contain the spread of the disease.
Minister Simon said that he has already approached the Governors from the three affected provinces, to seek their assistance in addressing the disease and stop it from spreading into Mount Hagen and the other nearby highlands provinces, as well as Madang and Morobe.
Mr. Simon said that the people in the three provinces can start slaughtering the pigs for their own consumption because they will not get sick, but they should not try to consume any meat from the pigs that have died from the disease.
Minister Simon has also urged everyone in the three provinces, as well as those from nearby Western Highlands and Jiwaka not to move any pork products out from the three provinces for a period of three months.
He also added that they will be setting up roadblocks on the highway leading into Mount Hagen, to ensure live pigs and even pork products are not moved out of the three provinces.
The team is now awaiting the State of Emergency Controller to give them clearance to move into Mount Hagen to start the containment exercise.
