Police Officers attacked in Port Moresby

Three policemen were ruthlessly attacked by a mob at 8 mile settlement in Port Moresby last night and a police firearm was stolen when police went into the settlement to recover a large quantity of cannabis.

Commander of NCD Central Assistant Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Jr said a policeman was slashed with a bush knife, another was beaten up and a third policeman was hit by a car when the settlers retaliated at around 7.30pm at the Marawaka block at 8 mile settlement.

Mr Wagambie said members of Fox unit 202 picked up a man who was in possession of the illicit drugs at Gerehu, where the suspect took them to the residence of a supplier inside the settlement when they were attacked and a police firearm was taken.

The three policemen entered a block inside the settlement and were going to arrest the prime suspect and recover the contraband when they were viciously attacked. The policeman holding the rifle was allegedly set on by about 20 men, who reportedly beat him with sticks and rocks before wrestling the firearm from his posession.

His other colleague was reportedly chased with a car and bumped several times, but the young Constable managed to survive the ordeal by scrambling out of harm's way. The third policeman was slashed with a bush knife across his left palm in this brutal attack.

Police reinforcements were quickly despatched to rescue the three policemen according to Commander Wagambie, who also expressed disappointment and urged community leaders at 8 mile settlement to return the firearm and bring in the suspects so they can be arrested and charged for attacking the law enforcement officers.

The three policemen were rushed to the Port Moresby General hospital for treatment. Police Investigations are continuing.
