Financial Constraints further delays Goroka Open By-election

The Papua New Guinea Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says funding issues have forced him to further delay the Goroka by-election until after the Covid-19 State of Emergency ends on 2 June 2020.

He explained that the government advised him late Monday afternoon that there was no funding available to proceed with the by-election.

Mr. Gamato had written to Secretary for Treasury Dairi Vele on 4 March 2020 requesting for K6.39 million to conduct the court-ordered Goroka by-election.

But was told on the eve of the issue of Writs that there was no funding available and without funds the Electoral Commission will not be able to successfully run the By election.

“After our (Electoral Commission) requests for funding to conduct by-election, no funding has come on the eve of the issue of writ.”

Mr. Gamato explained that Controller of Covid-19 State of Emergency David Manning and the Governor General Sir Bob Dadae had given their respective approvals but funding was the only dilemma.
