O'Neill Calls for the Return of Personal Freedoms and Business Activity after SOE Conclusion

The declared conclusion of the State of Emergency (SOE) in Papua New Guinea, yesterday, June 16, has to also mean the end of dictatorial police powers and personal restrictions that have been imposed on the people of our country.

The Leader of the People’s National Congress Party, Hon. Peter O’Neill, CMG, MP, has demanded the Government to let people get back to their lives and reopen the economy, which can be done while continuing to maintain COVID-safe practices.

Mr. O’Neill said PNC will give the government a day to demonstrate that the new National Pandemic Act is not simply an ‘SOE Version Two’ and the continuation of a police brutality.

“Now the government must prove that it is genuine and that it has truly ‘heard the cry of our people’ to end the suppression of human rights and business activity,” Mr. O’Neill said.

“The government must be true to its word and restore democratic process and personal freedoms.

“Firstly, there should be no more cases of police stopping and harassing people and extorting money.

“This means there should not be a single roadblock anywhere in the country that prevents the movement of our people under the false pretence of the COVID-19 response.

“There must be free movement for our people and vehicles along the Highlands Highway, so that agricultural goods can get to markets.

“There must be no more closing of food markets, and no more raids on villages and communities that are just excuses for violence and theft by a few corrupt police.

“I call on every man and woman in our country to report any harassment or intimidation to higher police authorities, to local Members of Parliament and to the media.

“There is a clear need for PNGDF and RPNGC, along with Immigration and Customs, to remain vigilant in our Western border provinces, but only for the prevention of illegal movements that are against the laws of our country.

“Secondly, there must be no more impediments to prevent the people of Goroka from exercising their democratic right to vote in the by-election, which must now proceed.

“Finally, this government must be honest in relation to COVID-19 testing results. Previous test results have been politicised and we really do not have a clear picture of whether the virus has spread in our country.

“Every Papua New Guinean is in this situation together, we must all remain vigilant to maintain safe practices, and we must work together to get our country back on track so we can all go back to work and businesses can grow and employ workers again.”
