7.9 Magnitude Earthquake rocks PNG but no Tsunami Threat

Despite an earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale rocking the eastern part of the country, the chances of a tsunami is unlikely.

That is according to the Director of the Port Moresby Geophysical Observatory, Mr. Chris McKee.

This is because the earthquake occurred deep within the earth at a debt of 90-100km.

The earthquake occurred 130km north/ northwest of Popondetta in Oro province, but was felt as far as Port Moresby and Lae cities with some damages reported.
