PNG PM Marape tells unemployed people in Port Moresby to go home
Prime Minister James Marape is encouraging Papa New Guineans who are not employed and are living in Port Moresby and other urban areas in the country to go back home to their villages.
The Prime Minister made the call at the ground-breaking ceremony of the 9-Mile to Laloki Road, that will connect the Sir Hubert Murray Highway with the Hiritano Highway.
“We are encouraging our citizens who do not have a job in the city to go back home and go into small agriculture businesses," he said.
“Our Government is already making direct investments in giving good prices for our agricultural commodities, putting in place price stabilisation funds and subsidising freight so that produce from outside of Port Moresby can be brought into the markets. "
Prime Minister Marape said this would also assist in ensuring small block holders of coffee, cocoa, copra and vanilla received good prices for their crops at a time of low global prices.
He said sustainable industries like agriculture, downstream timber, tourism and fisheries were the back bone of the economy.
“We intend to build enabling infrastructure into all parts of the country so that 10 years from now, everyone in the country can participate in the economy, " Prime Minister Marape said.
He said the building of roads would open up economic corridors for the entire country, with people not having to come to Port Moresby to look for jobs or business.
Prime Minister Marape said quality roads could be built throughout nation.
