PNG records nine new COVID-19 deaths on Sunday 9 May – total deaths up to 130

 Papua New Guinea has recorded nine new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Sunday, May 9, increasing the total number of deaths to 130.


The deaths were reported in three provinces including the National Capital District with three deaths, Western Highlands with five and Eastern Highlands with a single death. Of the nine deaths, seven were males and two females between the ages of 47 and 75 years.

Also in the last 24 hours as of 12 midday, May 9, 267 new cases were reported with East Sepik reporting the highest with 50. Western Highlands reported 49 new cases, New Ireland 44, East New Britain 30, Southern Highlands 21, Autonomous Region of Bougainville 19, Gulf 14, Manus 11, Morobe eight, NCD and Oro six cases each, Hela three, Enga and Madang two cases each and Western province and Eastern Highlands a single case each.

Of the 267 cases recorded, 105 were males and 151 females. Their ages range between two to 86 years. At the time of testing, 198 cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19, 46 had co-mordities and two had to be hospitalized. Of the new cases 38 had contact with confirmed cases whilst 33 are health workers.

So far a total of 104,674 tests have been conducted for COVID-19. The country’s COVID-19 cases now stands at 12,493 with 130 known deaths. A total of 10,833 recoveries have been recorded with 1,530 people still active within the last 14-day period.

All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases.

Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 158,309,522 including 783,013 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll is at 3,296,311 including 13,022 new deaths in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Sunday May 9.
