PM Marape encourages PNG Men to take leadership Starting at home

Prime Minister James Marape says Papua New Guinea needs men at all levels to take leadership – starting at home - for the good of the country.

He said this in his address at the Digicel Men-of-Honour Awards at APEC Haus in Port Moresby on Wednesday (May 3, 2023) night.

The Prime Minister thanked Digicel Foundation for telling the positive stories about PNG men to inspire change right around the country.

“This country needs men in all sectors to take leadership,” PM Marape told a fullhouse crowd, adding that he had been inspired by the stories of all participants.

“If you want your country to be better, it starts with you, it starts with me.

“The real man you are is the person in your house, in your home, in front of your wife, in front of your daughter, in front of your son. That is the man you are.

“I appeal to all men throughout the length and breadth of our country: ‘Check yourself at the altar of your home’.

“Who are you and what is your real self is the character you put on in your home.

“The wife you have, the mother you have, the aunty you have, the sister you have – at home and in your community – means the circle of ‘Men-of-Honour’ starts at home and must permeate throughout the length and breadth of our country.”

PM Marape said if every man in PNG did this, many of the country’s social problems would be solved, without the need for intervention by law-enforcement agencies.

“It starts with you; it starts with me. Be a ‘man-of-honour’, and this will have a cascading effect of good, positive influence right around us throughout the length and breadth of our country” he said.

“The easiest contribution every son of Papua New Guinea can do to our country is to be a good leader at home in the first instance.

“I long for the day when every man in our country is not abusing his spouse and exercises good leadership at his home.”
