Transparency International PNG Strongly Condemns Violent Unrest, Urges Restoration of Peace and Order

In response to the disturbing events that unfolded in Port Moresby on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and subsequently spread to Lae and other areas, Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) has expressed its deepest concerns and issued a stern condemnation.

TIPNG calls on the public and all involved parties to prioritize the restoration of peace and order, urging individuals to return to their homes to prevent further escalation of violence and looting in our cities.

"The frustration and anger among police personnel regarding mishandling of payroll tax calculations is but a tip of the iceberg in terms of a dysfunctional government system. The public service and indeed the Police are institutions of state and, if they are truly independent and free of political control, should play a critical role as a check and balance to the executive government," stated TIPNG Board Chair, Peter Aitsi.

Highlighting the crucial role of strong, independent, and competent institutions in curbing corruption, TIPNG emphasizes that a lack thereof has contributed to a significant increase in corruption, affecting the management of the country and the quality of life for its people.

TIPNG implores citizens to refrain from resorting to violence and illegal activities, emphasizing that such actions inflict further suffering on innocent citizens and undermine the foundations of law and order.

Chairman Peter Aitsi specifically calls on the highest levels of the Papua New Guinea government to engage immediately in genuine, open dialogue with police representatives to address their legitimate grievances. The plea is for a swift and transparent resolution to the crisis, aimed at restoring the rule of law and order in society.

Furthermore, TIPNG urges the Police Commissioner and the senior leadership of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary to take all necessary measures to restore order and ensure the safety of citizens. The opportunistic violence and looting witnessed during the unrest are deemed completely unacceptable, demanding swift and decisive action from law enforcement authorities to protect the public and apprehend those involved in criminal activities.

In addition, TIPNG emphasizes the need for an independent investigation into the events leading up to the police strike and the subsequent violence. Understanding the root causes of this crisis is deemed essential to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. TIPNG remains committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and the well-being of Papua New Guinea's citizens.
