Lam Hails Ipape’s Heroics as Leigh Secure Super League Semi-Final Spot
Lam Hails Ipape’s Heroics as Leigh Secure Super League Semi-Final Spot following a hard-fought 14-6 victory over Salford Red Devils in the play-offs. Edwin Ipape's outstanding performance, which earned him the man-of-the-match title, was crucial in securing Leigh's place in the Super League semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
Lachlan Lam, Ipape’s teammate and fellow Papua New Guinea international, was quick to praise the hooker’s efforts. The duo, who have played 54 games together for Leigh since joining in 2022, have been key figures in the team’s success, including helping to promote the club and lifting the Challenge Cup in 2023.

In Friday night’s play-off match, Ipape played a pivotal role, assisting Gareth O’Brien’s try with a powerful burst through the defense before scoring a try of his own. His performance, which secured his second consecutive man-of-the-match award, was instrumental in Leigh’s victory.
“He (Ipape) has been a national hero for a long time in Papua New Guinea,” Lam said after the match. “He does things you’d expect from centres and full-backs, and then he runs like a front-rower. He’s just a hybrid, a freak. We love Edwin, and you can see why.”
Ipape’s contributions have been central to Leigh’s historic Super League campaign. The Leopards will now face Wigan Warriors in the semi-final on Sunday, as they aim to continue their unprecedented run in the competition.
Lam and Ipape, who have also played together six times for Papua New Guinea on the international stage, have built a strong partnership both domestically and for their national team.
