PNG Prime Minister Appeals to UN to Help Safeguard Nation’s Biodiversity

Prime Minister James Marape has called on the United Nations for support in preserving Papua New Guinea’s vast natural forests. During a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres, Marape stressed the importance of protecting the country's forests, which are part of the third largest forest area in the world, after the Amazon and Congo. The meeting took place following Marape’s address to the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York last Friday.

Marape emphasized the global significance of PNG’s forests, describing them as the "lungs of the earth" due to their crucial role in absorbing carbon and supporting biodiversity. He urged for collective international action to help preserve these forests, which are vital not only to PNG but also to the global environment. His appeal highlighted the pressing need for stronger partnerships to address environmental challenges.

In his remarks, Marape also noted that Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations in the world. He explained that the country is home to a wide array of sub-ethnicities and sub-cultures, all of which are deeply connected to the land and natural resources. This cultural diversity further underscores the importance of protecting the environment for the livelihood of its people.

Additionally, Marape pointed out that Papua New Guinea hosts around seven percent of the world’s biodiversity, much of it housed in the tropical rainforests and marine ecosystems. He highlighted the country’s efforts to sustainably manage its land, forests, and seas, recognizing that the well-being of its people depends on the continued health of these ecosystems.

Marape concluded by reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation in the face of climate change, urging the global community to support PNG's efforts in safeguarding its natural resources for future generations.
