Former Kumul Player Keven Appo Banned by PNGRFL Following UK Charges
The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) has indefinitely suspended former Kumul and PNG international Keven Appo from all participation and representative duties. This decision comes after reports from the BBC that Appo fled the United Kingdom following charges of rape, sexual assault, and two counts of assault. He failed to appear in a UK court on Monday, prompting concern from both PNG authorities and the PNGRFL.
PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka stated that the league has a zero-tolerance policy for violence against women and criminal misconduct, stressing that Appo’s actions are unacceptable. Tsaka urged Appo to cooperate with the authorities and adhere to the legal process, emphasizing that such behavior does not reflect the values of the sport or the nation.
PNGRFL Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hondina expressed disappointment over the allegations, highlighting that the league aims to create opportunities for Papua New Guineans to succeed internationally. Hondina said players representing PNG must uphold respect and abide by the laws of the countries they visit. He reassured stakeholders that PNGRFL is working closely with the UK Rugby League to address the matter and ensure compliance with international standards.
The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary is awaiting a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request from the Attorney General’s Office to facilitate Appo’s extradition to the UK. Acting Police Commissioner Donald Yamasombi explained that under PNG’s Extradition Act (1975), police can arrest and extradite individuals accused of crimes in treaty nations once an MLA request is approved.
Commissioner Yamasombi stated that once the Attorney General clears the request, authorities will move swiftly to extradite Appo. He reiterated PNG’s commitment to international legal cooperation, adding that the country is prepared to assist any treaty nation in such matters.
The PNGRFL confirmed it is in communication with authorities in both the UK and PNG to resolve the issue. The league assured the public it will take all necessary measures to protect the integrity of rugby league in Papua New Guinea while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical standards.
