Kumuls Captain Kyle Laybutt Bows Out, Leaving a Lasting Legacy in PNG Rugby

Former Papua New Guinea Kumuls coach and East New Britain Governor Michael Marum has praised the dedication and leadership of Kumuls captain Kyle Laybutt, who recently announced his retirement from representative rugby league. Laybutt, who has worn the PNG colours proudly since 2018, is celebrated for his commitment to the team and for setting a remarkable example for future players.

"I would like to thank Kyle for putting up his hand to represent PNG and for always giving 100% and more in every game," Marum said. "He has been a true role model in the game and a great ambassador for future generations of players."

The PNG rugby league community has recognized Laybutt's significant contributions, particularly his involvement in the 2018 Prime Minister’s XIII and the PNG vs. England Knights exhibition matches held in Lae and Port Moresby, both of which were under Marum's coaching.

Laybutt made his Kumuls debut in 2019 during a match against Samoa in Sydney, alongside prominent players such as Edene Gebbie, Edwin Ipape, and Xavier Coates. That year, his skillset was further highlighted during the Oceania Cup against Fiji and the historic win over the Great Britain Lions in Port Moresby on November 11.

The 14-time capped Kumuls player was appointed captain in 2023, where he led the team to a Pacific Bowl championship. Laybutt’s leadership qualities, quiet demeanor, and focus have earned him immense respect, especially in leading the Kumuls alongside his younger brother, Zac Laybutt, who made his debut for PNG in the same year.

Kumuls teammate Judah Rimbu shared his admiration for Laybutt, recalling how the veteran player had been an inspiration during his youth in junior competitions. "Before joining the Kumuls, I always had huge respect for him," Rimbu said. "His defence was something else, putting those big shots on bigger players. I’ve truly loved every minute of playing alongside Kyle."

Rimbu also expressed his pride in winning back-to-back Pacific Bowl titles with Laybutt, affectionately known as "Buttsy." “I’ll miss playing alongside him, but I’m grateful to have shared such unforgettable moments. Wishing him nothing but the best in his next adventure.”

Kyle Laybutt’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished chapter in PNG rugby league, and his leadership, dedication, and passion will continue to inspire future generations of players in Papua New Guinea and beyond.
