PNG in the Running to Host Major Rugby League Tournaments
Papua New Guinea (PNG) has emerged as a leading contender to host two major Rugby League World Cup events in the coming years, with bids for the 2030 men’s and 2028 women’s tournaments. The roadmap for international rugby league, unveiled by Code Sports, highlights a structured calendar for the sport over the next six years, including the participation of several new host nations.
The 2030 men’s Rugby League World Cup shortlist features PNG alongside Kenya, South Africa, the United States, and New Zealand. While PNG is already confirmed to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Australia, the country is keen to secure full hosting rights for the 2030 edition. Meanwhile, the women’s World Cup in 2028 will be awarded to one of four nations: France, New Zealand, Kenya, or PNG.
In a significant change, the Rugby League World Cups for men, women, and wheelchair categories will no longer be held concurrently after 2026. The hosting rights for each event will be decided separately, with England among the nations expressing interest in organizing the 2029 wheelchair tournament. IRL chairman Troy Grant highlighted the progress in rugby league governance, emphasizing stronger planning and improved professionalism within the sport.
“The game has come a long way, and we’re now seeing clearer structures, better communication, and increased confidence from clubs,” said Grant. He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by NRL initiatives and the efforts of rugby league volunteers worldwide.
The international rugby league schedule from 2025 to 2030 outlines several key tournaments:
2025: Australian men’s tour of England, Pacific Championships (New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa), Pacific Bowl (Fiji, PNG, Cook Islands), Women’s Pacific Championships (Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, PNG)
- 2026: Men’s, women’s, and wheelchair World Cup (Australia and PNG)
- 2027: New Zealand men’s tour of England, Pacific Championships for men and women
- 2028: Women’s Rugby League World Cup
- 2029: Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup
- 2030: Men’s Rugby League World Cup
