Policeman Killed in Southern Highlands Road Accident

A policeman has died, and others were injured in a road accident at Mt Fire in Upper Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, according to police reports. Provincial police commander Chief Supt Epenes Nili confirmed that the officer, a Mobile Squad member based in Enga, was traveling from Tari to Mendi when the incident occurred.

Chief Supt Nili stated that a team of investigators had been dispatched to the accident site to determine the cause. "At this point, there are too many stories being shared verbally or on social media," he said. "We will let our investigation team do their job."

He added that there were conflicting reports regarding the circumstances of the incident. Some reports suggested that the officers were ambushed while traveling to Mendi, while others claimed they were fleeing from a fight. "All these are just allegations until the investigation team confirms and provides an official police report," he said.

The police commander also addressed rumors circulating on social media, urging the public to refrain from spreading false information. He emphasized the need to wait for the investigation to be completed before drawing conclusions.

In addition to the death of the policeman, there are unconfirmed reports of civilians being injured in the accident. Chief Supt Nili said the investigation team would verify these claims as part of their inquiries.

The incident has raised concerns in the community, with police appealing for calm and patience as they work to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
