New Zealand Trade Official Visits PNG to Boost Economic Cooperation

One of New Zealand’s most senior trade officials, Greg Andrews, recently visited Lae as part of his mission to strengthen trade and economic ties between Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. According to a statement released by the New Zealand High Commission, the visit aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation and gain firsthand insight into PNG’s economic landscape.

While in Lae, Mr. Andrews met with local businesses to understand the current economic conditions, challenges faced by entrepreneurs, and the nature of ongoing cooperation between the two countries. The engagement provided an opportunity to listen directly to the experiences of the business community in the country’s industrial hub.

As part of his itinerary, Mr. Andrews toured the Lae Market redevelopment project, which is being jointly supported by New Zealand and Australia. The redevelopment aims to improve facilities for vendors and customers, enhancing economic participation at the grassroots level.

He also visited the South Pacific International Container Terminal at Lae Port. The terminal plays a critical role in trade logistics for Papua New Guinea, and the visit highlighted its importance in supporting regional economic growth and connectivity.

The New Zealand High Commission noted that Mr. Andrews also engaged with businesses supported by the Business Link Pacific (BLP) programme. The initiative is designed to assist small and medium enterprises across the Pacific region with business advisory services and support for sustainable growth.
