PNG Air Celebrates 38 Years of Service Alongside Nation’s 50th Independence

PNG Air has marked its 38th anniversary this month, commemorating nearly four decades of service to the people of Papua New Guinea. The milestone comes as the country also celebrates its 50th year of independence, making the occasion particularly meaningful for the airline and its stakeholders.

The airline currently connects 23 destinations across Papua New Guinea, operating a fleet of Dash 8-100 and ATR 72-600 aircraft. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was carrying close to 500,000 passengers annually, supported by approximately 600 staff nationwide. PNG Air also plays a vital economic role through its Charter and Cargo services, providing critical support to local industries, businesses, and communities.

Chief Executive Officer Brian Fraser acknowledged the significance of the anniversary, stating, “For 38 years, PNG Air has been proud to serve as the connective thread of our nation, helping people reach their loved ones, businesses expand their reach, and communities thrive.” He added, “As Papua New Guinea marks its 50th year of independence, we are reminded that true independence is built on connection.”

The airline has announced plans to transition to an all-ATR fleet, aiming to improve operational efficiency and enhance the quality of service on domestic routes. It is also exploring new regional opportunities as part of its long-term growth strategy.

Fraser further explained, “With our planned fleet expansion and continued investment in Charter and Cargo services, we are reaffirming our commitment to support the economic future of Papua New Guinea with passion, dedication, and pride.”

Throughout June, PNG Air plans to celebrate its anniversary with a range of activities, including contests, promotions, and the sharing of inspirational travel stories. The airline extended its gratitude to its loyal passengers, employees, and partners for their enduring support over nearly four decades.

PNG Air reaffirmed its mission to remain a lifeline for the country, stating it looks forward to serving Papua New Guineans well into the future.
