New Electorates Announced in PNG Ahead of 2027 Elections

Papua New Guinea’s electoral map is set to change ahead of the 2027 elections with the introduction of six new Open electorates, including one for the Motu-Koita community in Port Moresby.

The Electoral Commissioner, Simon Sinai, confirmed the expansion during the Motu-Koita Assembly election count on Friday, saying the move is vital for improving indigenous representation in Parliament. “This is a change we must all prepare for,” he said.

Joining Motu-Koita on the list of new electorates are Baniara in Milne Bay, Baining in East New Britain, Middle Sepik in East Sepik, Mendi Central in Southern Highlands, and Anglimp in Jiwaka. The additions are based on a 2022 proposal by the Electoral Boundaries Commission.

Sinai, who also chairs the commission, said preparations are progressing to have these new electorates ready for contest in 2027. He noted that these developments are part of broader reforms to make elections more inclusive and representative.

In the recent Motu-Koita Assembly elections, Russel Wavik unseated incumbent chairman Dadi Toka Jr. Two female representatives and 14 ward councillors were also elected in the peaceful one-day polling.

Sinai praised the community’s orderly conduct and reaffirmed the Commission’s goal to improve election procedures, particularly vote counting, in future national polls.
