PNG Pursues Bold Economic Pact with UAE to Mark 50-Year Milestone

Papua New Guinea is poised to sign a comprehensive economic and diplomatic agreement with the United Arab Emirates, marking a historic first as the nation looks to broaden its global trade footprint.

Minister Richard Maru announced during a press event in Port Moresby that PNG will soon formalize a high-level partnership with the UAE. He described the move as PNG's entry point into the Arab world—a diplomatic and trade achievement of a kind not seen since the country’s independence.

According to Minister Maru, the UAE is not only ready to host PNG's first embassy in the Gulf region, but is also eager to formalize trade relations through a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). However, before that happens, both sides are preparing to sign the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) and Air Services Agreement (ASA) by September 3.

The agreements were shaped during a two-day mission to Abu Dhabi by Minister Maru, who held bilateral talks with senior UAE officials, including Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi and Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi.

Secretary Jacinta Warakai Manua confirmed that both the IPPA and ASA will serve as prerequisites for CEPA and the embassy’s establishment. She added that the final texts are being reviewed by PNG’s relevant departments.

Maru has called on departments including Foreign Affairs, Transport, and the Investment Promotion Authority to finalize the documents within two weeks to allow the signing to take place at the upcoming PNG Special Economic Zone Summit.
