PNG Embraces Artificial Intelligence Through NMCA Launch

Papua New Guinea has placed artificial intelligence at the center of its governance reform with the launch of the National Monitoring and Coordination Authority (NMCA) in Port Moresby on Wednesday, 13th August 2025. The initiative, backed by Prime Minister James Marape and senior leaders, aims to transform government oversight and accountability through the use of data-driven technology.

Minister for Police and Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, said AI would become the backbone of national decision-making. He explained that the NMCA would embed digital transformation in all areas of government, enabling accurate analysis, forecasting, and monitoring of development programs.

“For the next 50 years, data must guide our policies,” Minister Tsiamalili stated. “Artificial Intelligence will allow us to analyse trends, forecast risks, and design solutions that improve service delivery while ensuring transparency and efficiency.”

He added that government systems will adopt visible digital footprints, ensuring real-time monitoring of projects. This, he said, will minimize manipulation and dismantle networks that compromise public service delivery.

Prime Minister Marape emphasized that the NMCA reflects his administration’s long-term vision. He said his legacy must be to leave behind a governance structure that accounts for every toea spent and enforces high engineering and technical standards across infrastructure.

Chief Secretary to Government, Ivan Pomaleu, said the NMCA would not function as a traditional bureaucracy but as a whole-of-government instrument powered by AI and data integration. He said it would bridge the gap between planning and delivery while restoring discipline in public service.

Through AI-powered platforms, the NMCA will provide predictive analytics, transparent evaluations, and real-time progress reports. Officials believe this digital transformation will place PNG at the forefront of accountable governance and ensure development efforts align with Vision 2050, the Medium Term Development Plan IV, and global Sustainable Development Goals.
