PNG Students Inspired by ExxonMobil’s Engineering Initiative

Seventy-five Grade 9 girls from five Port Moresby schools were given a glimpse into the world of engineering during ExxonMobil PNG’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at its LNG Plant in Caution Bay.

Now in its second year in Papua New Guinea, the program aims to inspire young women to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This year’s theme, “Design Your Future,” encouraged participants to think creatively and pursue their ambitions in technical fields.

The students engaged in practical science experiments and collaborative challenges, guided by 42 volunteers from ExxonMobil’s Women in Energy Network. They also had the opportunity to interact with Papua New Guinean engineers who shared their experiences and insights about working in the energy sector.

ExxonMobil PNG Chairman and Managing Director, Dinesh Sivasamboo, visited the event and praised the students for their teamwork and eagerness to learn. He reminded them that the nation’s energy industry holds vast potential for future professionals.

“It’s great to see that even though you’ve come from different schools, you’ve quickly learned to work together to solve real-world problems,” Mr. Sivasamboo said. “These are important skills that will help you succeed in life and in your careers.”

He added that Papua New Guinea’s energy outlook is promising and encouraged the students to remain committed to their education.

One participant, Zillar Naku Pa’aka from Gordon Secondary School, said the event changed her perspective. “I didn’t think much about taking on engineering, but after today, I might have a change of mind,” she said.
