PNG Produces First Certified Ethical Hacker Under US Defence Framework

Papua New Guinea has produced its first internationally certified ethical hacker, marking a major step forward in building local cyber security capacity.

Solomon Wesley Sua, Founder and CEO of Cyber Security (PNG) Limited, has successfully completed the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) v13 certification, the world’s most recognised ethical hacking qualification, awarded by the EC-Council University in the United States.

The CEH certification is formally recognised by the US Department of Defense and aligns with the DoD 8140 cyber workforce framework, which sets standards for cyber defence and national security roles.

Mr Sua said the certification meets requirements for numerous cyber positions within the US military, government and defence contracting sectors.

In addition to the certification, Mr Sua holds a Master of Science in Cyber Security, which he completed with Summa Cum Laude distinction in New Mexico.

He said the achievement demonstrates that Papua New Guinea can develop and retain world-class cyber security expertise locally.

“For many developing nations, cyber security capability has traditionally been imported. This achievement proves PNG can build and lead its own expertise to international standards,” Mr Sua said.

He said the certification enables PNG to contribute to regional efforts against cyber espionage and cyber crime.

“Collaboration among nations is critical. PNG can now be a key player in sharing intelligence and defending against common cyber threats,” he said.

Mr Sua also raised concerns about the increasing risks associated with PNG’s shift toward digital government infrastructure.

“As cloud-powered systems expand, domestic cyber crime will rise. Protecting digital platforms such as electronic voting and government services is essential,” he said.

He described the certification process as rigorous and financially demanding.

“It required over K10,000 in costs, extensive study, and a four-hour examination under intense conditions,” he said.

Despite opportunities to work overseas, Mr Sua reaffirmed his commitment to Papua New Guinea.

“I am qualified to work anywhere, including with the US Department of Defense, but my priority is to serve PNG,” he said.

Mr Sua, originally from Tambul-Nebilyer in Western Highlands Province, is now working towards additional cyber certifications and undertaking postgraduate studies in Digital Health Systems through the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.
