PNG's Madang Governor calls for expanded Chinese investment

Papua New Guinea's Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa has invited the Government of China to increase its investment presence in Madang Province, saying the province is ready for further development partnerships.

The call was made during a visit by Chinese Ambassador Yang Xiaoguang, who travelled to Madang last Friday to witness the handover of 2,000 solar-powered street lights for installation around the township.
Governor Pariwa said Madang already hosts China’s largest mining project in the country — the Ramu Nickel and Cobalt mine — and believes the success of that operation should open doors for more cooperation.

He said the province has played a role in supporting China’s economic interests through the mine and expects future engagement to bring mutual benefit to both sides.
Pariwa also stressed that any new investment must comply with Papua New Guinea laws and place the interests of local communities first. “We will work together and finalise that, but it must be a win-win arrangement for all parties,” he said.

The Chinese Ambassador acknowledged Madang’s role in the bilateral relationship and said the Ramu Nickel project remains an important link between PNG and China.
