PNG'sAir Niugini Rolls Out New Airbus A220-300 on Sydney Route

Papua New Guinea’s national carrier Air Niugini has introduced its latest aircraft, the Airbus A220-300, on the Port Moresby to Sydney route, marking a fresh step in PNG’s aviation development. The first flight touched down in Sydney on Sunday, March 29, 2026, signalling the airline’s continued push to upgrade its fleet and services.

The move places PNG in a stronger position within regional air travel, with the new aircraft now operating on one of Air Niugini’s busiest international corridors. The Sydney route becomes the second overseas destination to welcome the A220-300 after its recent debut on flights to Cairns.

Flights between Port Moresby and Sydney will now run three times a week, giving travellers more options. Departures are scheduled for Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays, leaving Port Moresby in the early afternoon and arriving in Sydney later the same day.

Passengers travelling from Sydney will also benefit from easier connections into Papua New Guinea and beyond, including routes to Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Honiara, Port Vila and Nadi, with Japan’s Narita expected to be added in July.

The new aircraft features a two-class layout with seating for 138 passengers and is designed to improve comfort during travel. It offers wider seats, larger windows and quieter cabins, along with onboard Wi-Fi available to all passengers.

Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne said the introduction of the aircraft on the Sydney service reflects the airline’s broader upgrade program.

“The deployment of the Airbus A220-300 to Sydney is a significant development for Air Niugini as we continue to modernise our fleet and expand our international reach. This aircraft brings a new level of comfort and efficiency to our operations and reinforces our commitment to providing a higher standard of service to our passengers travelling between Papua New Guinea and Australia.”

Mr Milne said Sydney continues to play a crucial role for business and travel, adding that increased services would strengthen ties between the two countries.

“Sydney is a key destination within our international network. By increasing our services and introducing the A220-300 on this route, we are enhancing accessibility and creating more opportunities for travel, trade and economic engagement between our two countries.”
