The appearance formed part of celebrations marking 125 years of the Royal Australian Navy, with the event drawing naval forces from across the region and beyond.
Under the command of Lieutenant Ziegfried Bartley, the vessel is one of four Guardian-class patrol boats operated by the PNG Defence Force Maritime Element. It was handed over to PNG in 2021 by Australia under a regional maritime security initiative.
During the fleet review, the Francis Agwi sailed alongside other naval ships in a coordinated display through Sydney Harbour. The ceremony included an aerial performance by the Royal Australian Air Force and a formal gun salute.
PNG Defence Force Commander Rear Admiral Philip Polewara attended the event and observed proceedings from HMAS Leeuwin. He was joined by Australia’s Chief of Defence Force Admiral Johnston and Navy Chief Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, along with other officials.
Fleet reviews have a long-standing history, dating back to the 1800s, and are used to recognise naval achievements while strengthening ties between participating countries. This year, 31 vessels representing 19 nations were involved.
The patrol boat is expected to make its return voyage to PNG in early April.
