PNG Mosquitoes win final
The MVIL PNG Mosquitoes have won the International Cup Trophy for 2014 after defeating the Ireland Warriors 6.9 (45) to 6.6 (42).
Trailing in the first three quarters, the Mossies staged their comeback with four minutes remaining after John Ikupu kicked a goal to put PNG in front for the first time in the game.Mossies Gideon Simon then sealed the win for PNG kicking the goal that cemented the win for PNG in the last minute of play.
Warriors captain, Mick Finn was outstanding for his side kicking four of his side’s goals which allowed his team to dominate most of the game. After the first two quarters, the game looked certain to go to the Warriors who made the most of their opportunities taking a 5 point lead into half time.
But in the end, the speed and determination of the Mossies was what got them through as they wore out the much taller and heavier Warriors towards the end of the game.In the women’s grand final, Canada proved too strong beating the highly favoured Irish with a 5.8 (38) to 2.0 (12) score line.
