PNG STUDENTS IN THE PHILIPPINES CELEBRATE 39TH INDEPENDENCE
The Papua New Guinean students at the Adventist University of Philippines (AUP) commemorated PNG’s 39th independence anniversary in a small but significant way.
The students started their day with the raising of the PNG flag, paying their respect to the country of their birth, their beloved home, 2441 miles away.
Pastor Barney Jack, the father of a first year Business Management student, Christina Jack, led the students in Christian fellowship, committing the country and students to our nation’s heavenly father.
The students, acknowledged their Christian faith, as being the source of their strength and drive to achieve their academic goals, whilst studying overseas.
The students took time out of their studies to reflect on their country and use this occasion to remind themselves of the duties they had as ambassadors of PNG while living and studying in the Philippines; to always strive to portray a positive image of their nationality and of themselves, as individuals.
They were also reminded to uphold the laws of the country in which they study in and to respect the people and cultures.
The President of the South Pacific International Students Association, Basilia Guba, a final year accounting student, encouraged students to live positively as Papua New Guineans on a foreign land.
The PNG students were joined by their Filipino and Yep Island (near Palau) counterparts to celebrate the day.
A total of twenty-four (24) students came together to mark the occasion.
